Rickenbacker Causeway Park Would String Together Miami’s Own Emerald Necklace

In the annals of urban planning and landscape design, the original ‘Emerald Necklace’ is a string of interconnected parks in Boston designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted that link the old Boston Common with Franklin Park, looping around the city. Rickenbacker Park, a new linear park proposed by architect Bernard Zyscovich, could similarly string together a chain of existing parks and green space along the Rickenbacker Causeway, creating an emerald necklace for Miami that would be South Florida’s own version of Olmsted’s great design.

What’s Old is New: Mapping Miami’s Historic and Not-So-Historic Real Estate

Visualizing urban development patterns by age can reveal a lot about the evolution of a city, historically and up to the present day. To state the obvious, historic preservation is a very hot topic in Miami right now. Miami’s most historic neighborhoods are not coincidentally many of its most popular, presenting a need for preservation, a public desire to preserve what makes those neighborhoods special to begin with, and inherent challenges to that preservation. Cities are also built in very different ways than they were in the past. Greater Miami is, of course, no exception to this rule, although development happens a little differently everywhere. By using data from the Miami-Dade Property appraiser, Gridics has mapped urban development across the entire county by decade constructed in shades of blue, allowing patterns of growth to be seen in the data.

Mini Wave of Small-Scale Infill Urbanism Coming to the Grove’s Bird Avenue

Significant changes, including a few new multifamily residential infill projects, are coming to Coconut Grove’s Bird Avenue—the extension of Bird Road east of US-1—with land available for more, as the road gears up for a redo. Pelican Grove, a ten unit development of luxury townhouses is under construction at 3258 Bird Avenue, while just down the street at 2955 Bird Avenue the six unit L’Uccello project is nearing completion. Meanwhile, lots at 2961 and 2967 Bird Avenue are for sale, possibly meaning more multifamily development could soon come to the Avenue.

FDOT Proposes to Bury I-395 and Biscayne Boulevard on Top of Each Other

An idea that has been floating around for a whilte, to bury both I-395 and Biscayne Boulevard in a part of Downtown Miami, has just gotten the look-over by the Florida Department of Transportation, which prepared a report on the feasability on their version of the plan. That version would only bury a few blocks of I-395, replacing the ‘signature bridge’ which FDOT is currently planning, as well as the bloicks from the northern edge of Museum Park to the opposite side of the Arsht Center, actually widdening Biscayne in front of the park to accomodate extra lanes leading to a local road and traffic circle above.

Claiming your project will have the ‘next Lincoln Road’ is a popular pasttime among Miami developers. Craig Robins has said that the Miami Design District’s Paseo Ponti will be Lincoln Road meets Bal Harbour Shops. The Related Group’s plan to pedestrianize South Miami Avenue through Brickell is modeled after Lincoln Road, with its mix of shops and restaraunts. Miami Worldcenter’s pedestrian streets have already been described as copies of Lincoln Road, while the planned Mall at Miami Worldcenter, now that it has been converted from a traditional enclosed mall to an exterior pedestrian mall, sounds even more Lincoln Road-ish than ever.

The Plan to Turn the Rickenbacker Causeway Into ‘Rickenbacker Park’ is Now A Lot Bolder

Construction Begins on Flagler Street’s Big Redo

Construction began last week on the big renovation of Downtown Miami’s Flagler Street. According to the project’s website “construction fencing was up and in-field mobilization” began on Phase One of the project, the block in front of the Dade County Courthouse, on January 4th. A week later, the road has been ripped up and new sewer/drainage things are lined up, ready to go into place.
