Centered on miles of condo towers stretching up and down Biscayne Bay, the Downtown Miami skyline visible today is an incredibly recent creation. For almost forty years the tallest tower in Florida was the Dade County Courthouse, a 28 story granite monument of a building on Flagler Street and NW 1st Avenue.

For almost forty years the tallest tower in Florida was the Dade County Courthouse, a 28 story granite monument of a building on Flagler Street and NW 1st Avenue (Fun fact: the top floors of the courthouse used to be the county jail. The inmates had the best view in town).
For almost all of Miami’s history, the tallest towers weren’t condos and some hotels like they are today, but mostly the office buildings (including the courthouse) of Downtown. Okay, and the Biltmore Hotel. And maybe the Roney Plaza. Anyways, the Downtown skyline has radically changed through Miami’s history.
