Grand Central, the well-known local music venue, nightclub, and event space that occupied a ninety five year old Florida East Coast Railway freight depot, has been demolished to make way for a portion of the Miami Worldcenter megaproject. Phillip Pessar photographed the building as bulldozers on Tuesday, the 29th of December, as bulldozers and dump trucks hauled slabs and chunks of it away.

At one time, Grand Central, along with a park that was privately built by Grand Central’s proprieter, Brad Knoefler, called Grand Central Park, could have been a centerpiece of a ‘grand’ revival of the Park West neighborhood. (the park was across the street at the future Marriott Miami Worldcenter site) That revival has finally come with Miami Worldcenter, as a completely new neighborhood is built ontop of the erased remnants of the previous one. Ironic.
