All Aboard Florida, eat your heart out. Although the passenger rail system’s proposal to construct a 991 foot tower (1,000 above sea level) at its currently-under-construction MiamiCentral Terminal in Downtown Miami has reportedly been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, that’s certainly not the first giant train station/tower to be planned for the site. At the historical location of the much smaller Florida East Coast Railway train station, in 1946 a plan was apparently put forward on Miami’s 50th anniversary to build a 41 story tower with an elevated concourse above the existing tracks. The design appears to be something of an Art Deco extravaganza, and may not have gotten much further than early proposal and planning stages. It would, however, have gone on the exact same city block that the 991-footer is planned to go on today.
